Walk into the pre-workout aisle and every tub promises the same thing: energy, pumps, focus. The differences that actually matter are in the ingredient panel, not the flavour name. Here's how to read one properly.
The ingredients worth caring about
Caffeine is the main energy driver, usually 150–300mg per serving. If you're sensitive to stimulants or train in the evening, look for a lower-caffeine or stim-free formula rather than just taking half a scoop.
Beta-alanine is what causes that tingling sensation on your skin — it's harmless, and it helps buffer lactic acid so you can push a few extra reps on higher-rep sets.
L-citrulline (not citrulline malate in tiny amounts) supports blood flow and the "pump" feeling. Effective doses start around 6–8g, and a lot of budget blends under-dose this badly.
Creatine monohydrate is sometimes included in pre-workouts, but since it needs to be taken daily to build up in your muscles, a separate creatine supplement is usually the smarter buy.
Matching the formula to your training
- Strength & powerlifting: prioritise caffeine and creatine, pump ingredients matter less.
- Bodybuilding & hypertrophy work: beta-alanine and citrulline for the extra reps and pump.
- Endurance or long sessions: lower caffeine, more citrulline and electrolytes, avoid the jittery high-stim blends.
- Evening training: go stim-free or under 100mg caffeine so it doesn't wreck your sleep.
Common mistakes
Taking a full scoop on an empty stomach when you're new to stimulants is the most common one — start with half a scoop to check tolerance. The second is building up a tolerance by using it daily; cycling off for a week every 6–8 weeks keeps it effective.
